As followers of Christ, we face a profound calling: to live not by the patterns of the world but by the light of God’s truth. This calling invites us to fully submit to God’s will, walking in goodness, righteousness, and truth. It is a privilege and responsibility to live as children of God, reflecting His kingdom in every part of our lives. This post explores what it means to embrace our new identity in Christ and how to live as children of light.

Understanding Our New Identity in Christ
When we come to know God, we are no longer slaves to sin or the desires that once controlled us. Instead, we are made alive in Christ Jesus. This transformation means:
Freedom from sin’s power and penalty
A new life marked by righteousness and truth
A calling to reflect God’s glory in our daily walk
This identity is not just a title but a reality that shapes how we think, act, and relate to others. We are called to live differently because we belong to God.
Rejecting the Patterns of the World
Before knowing Christ, many lived according to worldly passions and desires. These ways are described as weak and worthless elementary principles. Returning to them after experiencing God’s grace would mean slavery to sin once again.
To live as children of light, we must:
Avoid conforming to worldly values and behaviors
Resist the passions that lead to sin
Make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its desires
This requires intentional choices daily. For example, choosing honesty over deceit, kindness over selfishness, and purity over compromise reflects walking in the newness of life.
Walking in Goodness, Righteousness, and Truth
Living as children of light means embodying the qualities that reflect God’s character:
Goodness: Acting with kindness and generosity
Righteousness: Living in right relationship with God and others
Truth: Being honest and grounded in God’s Word
These qualities are not optional but essential. They demonstrate that we have been called by God and are responding in obedience.
Putting on the Armor of Light
The Bible encourages believers to cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. This metaphor reminds us to:
Reject sinful behaviors and attitudes
Clothe ourselves with Christ’s character and strength
Stand firm against temptations and challenges
Practical ways to do this include prayer, reading Scripture, fellowship with other believers, and serving others. These habits strengthen our walk and keep us aligned with God’s will.
Living for God’s Will and Glory
Our new life is not just about personal holiness but about glorifying God. As children of God, our purpose is to:
Live in a way that pleases God
Reflect His kingdom on earth
Share His love and truth with others
This means seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, trusting that everything else will follow. It also means embracing the responsibility of our calling with joy and dedication.
Embracing the Privilege and Responsibility
Being called by God is the highest honor. It comes with the responsibility to live worthy of that calling. This includes:
Continually examining our lives to ensure they align with God’s standards
Encouraging others to walk in the light
Persevering through trials with faith and hope
Remember, we are sons and daughters of glory, destined to be with the King of glory forever.
Living as children of light means embracing a new identity that transforms every part of our lives. It calls us to reject the old ways, walk in goodness, righteousness, and truth, and live fully for God’s glory. This journey requires daily commitment but offers the greatest reward: a life that honors God and reflects His kingdom. Let this truth inspire you to walk boldly in the newness of life you have in Christ.
