Walking by the Spirit: Embracing the Battle Between Flesh and Faith

Walking by the Spirit is a journey every believer faces, marked by an ongoing battle between the desires of the flesh and the guidance of the Spirit. This struggle is not a sign of failure but a clear indication of the Spirit’s presence within us, leading us toward truth and righteousness. Understanding this inner conflict helps believers live intentionally, setting their minds on spiritual things and resisting the pull of sinful desires.

The Spirit as Our Guide to Truth

No one can truly understand the things of God except through the Spirit of God. The Spirit leads believers into all truth, showing the way to live in a manner that honors God. This guidance is essential because the flesh and the Spirit are in constant opposition. The flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit opposes those desires to protect us from sin.

This opposition is not a sign of defeat but a sign that the Spirit of life dwells within us. It means we are children of God, adopted and sealed by the Spirit, who actively works to keep us from actions that dishonor God. The Spirit’s role is to guide us down the path of righteousness, helping us make choices that align with God’s will.

Understanding the Battle Within

The conflict between flesh and Spirit is an internal battle every believer experiences. The flesh represents our sinful nature, craving things that lead away from God. The Spirit, on the other hand, desires to lead us toward holiness and life. These opposing forces create tension, but this tension is necessary for spiritual growth.

  • The flesh lusts after what the Spirit opposes.

  • The Spirit desires what the flesh resists.

  • This opposition reveals the presence of the Spirit in our lives.

Those who live according to the flesh cannot please God because their minds are set on earthly desires. In contrast, those who set their minds on the Spirit experience life and peace. This battle is a sign that the Spirit is actively working within us, protecting us from sin and guiding us toward God’s will.

Setting Our Minds on the Spirit

To walk by the Spirit means to intentionally focus our thoughts and desires on spiritual things. This requires daily effort and commitment. When our minds are set on the flesh, we become hostile to God’s ways and unable to please Him. But when we fix our minds on the Spirit, we align ourselves with God’s purpose. The way for us to fix our mind on the Spirit is by being in His Word so that we can be renewed in the Spirit of our mind. In His Word through the Spirit we are guided into all truth which leads us down His path of righteousness for His name sake.

Practical ways to set your mind on the Spirit include:

  • Regular prayer and meditation on Scripture

  • Seeking the Spirit’s guidance in decisions

  • Surrounding yourself with a community that encourages spiritual growth

  • Confessing and turning away from sinful desires

By doing these, believers can keep in step with the Spirit, living lives that reflect God’s righteousness.

Crucifying the Flesh to Live for God

Belonging to Christ means having crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. This does not mean the flesh disappears but that it no longer controls us. Instead, we live for the will of God, empowered by the Spirit. We are not sinless but it helps us to Sin Less and honor the Lord with this new life He has given us in Christ. So that we can walk in a way that is pleasing to the Lord.

Even though our bodies are subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in believers, giving life to our mortal bodies. This life is not just physical but spiritual, marked by righteousness and a new way of living. Therefore, we must consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord so that we would no longer live for ourselves but for Christ who died for us and rose again.

Living as Sons of God

Those led by the Spirit are recognized as sons of God. This relationship is intimate and transformative. The Spirit not only guides but also empowers believers to put to death the deeds of the body. This means actively rejecting sinful actions and choosing to live in a way that honors God.

Being led by the Spirit involves:

  • Listening for the Spirit’s promptings

  • Responding with obedience

  • Trusting the Spirit’s power to overcome temptation

  • Growing in faith and character through the Spirit’s work

This lifestyle reflects the new identity believers have in Christ and the ongoing work of the Spirit within them.
