Eternal Life Through Christ: Believe, Repent, and Be Saved
Death is not an accident in the biblical story. It is the result of sin. Scripture says sin entered the world through Adam, and death spread to all people because all sinned. That is the problem God came to solve.
The gospel does not begin with human improvement. It begins with God’s mercy. Sin earns death, but God gives eternal life through Jesus Christ. That is the message Christians proclaim: believe, repent, and be saved.
Sin brought death into the world
The Bible gives a clear account of why death matters. Romans 5:12 teaches that sin entered the world through one man, Adam, and death came through sin. Death then spread to all people.
This does not mean every person sinned in the same way Adam sinned. It means Adam’s rebellion opened the door to a broken world. Humanity now lives under sin’s power and death’s rule.
Romans 6:23 gives the truth plainly. The wages of sin is death. Wages are earned. Sin has a real cost. It separates people from God, corrupts the heart, and ends in judgment.
This is why the gospel is not optional advice. It is rescue.
Human life is temporary. Every person faces death. No amount of strength, wisdom, money, or success can stop it. Hebrews 9:27 says people die once, and after that comes judgment.
That fact should sober us. It should also point us to God’s gift. The same verse that says sin’s wages are death also says God’s gift is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Sin earns death. God gives life.
That difference matters. Eternal life is not wages. It is not payment for moral effort. It is not earned by religious performance. It is a gift that comes through the Son of God.
God made a way through His Son
God did not leave humanity under death without hope. He made a way for people to live with Him forever.
John 3:16 teaches that God loved the world and gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. The next verse matters too. John 3:17 says God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but so the world might be saved through Him.
That means the mission of Jesus is saving mercy.
God’s heart is not cold toward sinners. He desires people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, as 1 Timothy 2:4 says. The truth centers on Christ. God’s testimony is about His Son.
1 John 5:11-12 states the matter with force. God has given eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life. Whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
That is direct. Eternal life is not found in vague spirituality. It is not found in human goodness. It is not found in denying sin or ignoring judgment. Life is in the Son.
Jesus has authority to give eternal life. In John 17:2, Jesus speaks of the authority the Father gave Him over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom the Father has given Him.
This is why faith in Christ is faith in God. To believe the Son is to receive the Father’s testimony. To reject the Son is to reject the One who sent Him.
John 5:24 says the one who hears Christ’s word and believes the One who sent Him has eternal life. That person does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life.
Passed from death to life. That is the gospel promise.
To reject God’s testimony is to remain condemned
John 3:18 gives both promise and warning. Whoever believes in the Son is not condemned. Whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
The warning is severe because the gift is clear.
God has spoken through His Son. Jesus did not speak on His own authority in isolation from the Father. In John 12:49-50, Jesus says the Father commanded Him what to say and what to speak, and that His commandment is eternal life.
The words of Jesus carry divine authority. They are not mere inspiration. They are not one opinion among many. Jesus said in John 6:63 that the words He spoke are spirit and life.
So unbelief is not a harmless private preference. It rejects God’s testimony.
John 3:33 uses strong language. The one who receives God’s testimony confirms that God is true. By contrast, 1 John 5:10 says the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has borne concerning His Son.
That is why unbelief condemns. It refuses the truth God gave for salvation.
Jesus also warned that His words will judge those who reject Him. John 12:48 says the one who rejects Christ and does not receive His words has a judge. The word Jesus spoke will judge that person on the last day.
Judgment is not random. It is righteous. It is tied to the truth God revealed.
Acts 17:30-31 says God now commands all people everywhere to repent, because He has fixed a day when He will judge the world in righteousness by the man He appointed. God gave assurance of this by raising Him from the dead.
That man is Jesus.
The resurrection proves that Jesus is not merely a teacher who died. He is the risen Lord. He is the appointed judge. He is also the Savior who gives life.
The resurrection gives assurance of life and judgment
The resurrection of Jesus is central to Christian faith. Without it, the promise of eternal life would be empty. With it, the promise stands.
1 Corinthians 15 teaches that by a man came death, and by a man has come the resurrection of the dead. Adam is tied to death. Christ is tied to resurrection.
Jesus’ resurrection gives assurance in two ways.
First, it assures believers that death will not have the last word. Christ rose bodily from the dead. Those who belong to Him will also be raised. Christian hope is not escape into nothingness. It is resurrection life with God.
Second, the resurrection assures the world that judgment is coming. Acts 17 connects the fixed day of judgment to the fact that God raised Jesus from the dead. The risen Christ is appointed by God.
This means the same resurrection that comforts believers also warns unbelievers.
Romans 4:24-25 connects faith, righteousness, and resurrection. It says righteousness will be counted to those who believe in God who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. Jesus was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
Justification means God declares a person righteous. This does not happen because the person has no sin. It happens because Christ died and rose, and God counts faith as righteousness.
Abraham is the biblical example. Romans 4 says Abraham was fully convinced that God was able to do what He had promised. That is why his faith was counted to him as righteousness.
Saving faith trusts God’s character. It believes God is true. It rests on His promise in Christ.
Eternal Life Through Christ stands on this foundation: God promised life in His Son, sent His Son, raised His Son, and now commands people to believe the gospel.
Repentance and faith are the right response
God commands all people to repent and believe the gospel. This is not a suggestion. It is the right response to the truth.
Repentance means turning from sin and turning to God. It is not mere regret. It is not fear without faith. It is a real change of allegiance.
Faith means trusting God’s testimony concerning His Son. It means receiving Jesus as the One the Father sent to give eternal life.
The gospel call includes both.
Repent
Turn away from sin, unbelief, and self-rule.
Believe
Trust that God is true and that eternal life is in His Son.
Receive
Take hold of Christ by faith, not by works.
Live
Walk in the new life God gives through the Spirit.
This message warns because love warns. If a bridge is out, silence is not kindness. If a house is burning, a warning is mercy. The gospel warns people because death and judgment are real.
Still, the message is not that God takes pleasure in people perishing. Scripture says God desires salvation. God made a way. God gave His Son. God calls people to life.
Those who reject Christ remain under condemnation because they refuse the only Savior. They reject the Spirit of life. They refuse the words that are spirit and life. They deny God’s testimony about His Son.
Jesus spoke of blasphemy against the Spirit as a grave and unforgivable sin. At its heart, the warning shows the terrible danger of resisting the Spirit’s witness to Christ. A person who finally rejects the Spirit’s testimony rejects the very mercy by which forgiveness comes.
The point is not to drive the repentant into despair. The point is to warn the hardened not to call God a liar.
If someone hears the gospel and turns to Christ, that turning is evidence of God’s mercy at work. The invitation still stands: repent and believe.
God saves by grace and counts faith as righteousness
No one earns eternal life. God gives it.
This matters because many people think salvation depends on being “good enough.” The Bible says otherwise. Human goodness cannot erase sin. Religious activity cannot defeat death. Moral effort cannot raise the dead.
God is both just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus, as Romans 3:26 teaches. He does not ignore sin. He judges it in Christ. He does not abandon sinners. He saves those who believe.
At the cross, Jesus bore sin. In the resurrection, God vindicated His Son. Through faith, believers are united to Christ and counted righteous before God.
This is why Christian assurance does not rest on feelings. It rests on God’s action.
God gave His Son.
God raised Him from the dead.
God gave testimony concerning Him.
God promises eternal life to those who believe.
As surely as death comes because of sin, resurrection life comes through Christ. The believer’s hope is not wishful thinking. It is anchored in the risen Jesus.
The message to proclaim is clear
The Christian message is not complicated.
Sin brought death.
God sent His Son.
Jesus gives eternal life.
God raised Him from the dead.
All people must repent and believe.
Those who believe pass from death to life.
Those who reject Christ remain condemned.
This is why the gospel must be proclaimed with both urgency and hope.
Urgency, because judgment is fixed by God. The words of Christ will judge those who reject Him. No one can escape accountability before the risen Lord.
Hope, because God has already made the way of salvation. He does not command repentance while hiding mercy. He calls people to believe because He has given His Son for life.
The right response is the faith of Abraham. Be fully convinced that God can do what He promised. Believe His testimony. Receive His Son. Trust His righteousness. Turn from sin and live.
The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. That gift is offered in the Son. The call is clear: believe, repent, and be saved.
